When you want to sell cardboard scrap into today’s recycling markets, what do you need to know? Our Phoenix plant manager Rick Smith manages our plant where we process scrap materials for the world’s recycling markets. In this video, Rick shows you just what to keep separate from your cardboard. Be sure to exclude waxed cardboard, fiberboard, plastics, foam, SBS (bleached material), molded pulp, food, or other contaminants.

Today’s recycling markets are always volatile. You may have heard something about China’s National Sword in the news. Most recently, the Chinese government imposed new restrictions on their import policies. For several decades, China has been the largest importer of American recyclables, especially paper and cardboard. They recycle cardboard to produce the cardboard boxes needed to pack their export products. Further, China intends to clean up its environment. For the time being, we can sell scrap cardboard, and it will be clean. We provide the Chinese with a very high quality product that has less than 10% of particular contaminants.

Working collaboratively with our customers, we create custom recycling programs. As a result, our customers learn how to most efficiently handle their waste stream and recycle more materials. Depending on the volumes involved, we supply the equipment for the most efficient way to collect recyclable materials. In a reasonably short time, customers begin saving more and more money.

In our Phoenix plant, we bale cardboard and office papers, and other papers. We shred paper for confidential document shredding. We destroy products that can no longer be sold. Whenever possible, we sell what is left into the recycling markets.

Call us today to sell cardboard scrap, destroy products, shred and recycle paper, and get our expertise on having an ever more sustainable business.

Across the recycling industry, we must all reduce and control any possible contamination to ensure the quality of the commodity materials we sell to end users. Meet Bill Anady, Plant Manager for Green Planet 21 at the Port of Tacoma. Bill says, “There is no current market for mixed, unsorted, or unclean recycling materials. This is the end of single stream recycling.” At Green Planet 21, we still take polycarbonate, the material that water cooler bottles are made of. We also take shrink wrap, the material used to secure goods onto pallets.

This video shows a few examples of what to avoid when recycling cardboard. We can no longer handle waxed cardboard, the material commonly used for produce boxes. We can no longer handle plastic strapping. Recyclables must be uniform in quality. When suppliers send us material that has other materials mixed in, it is contaminated and we have to expend effort to clean it up and improve its value. That eliminates or reduces the rebate to the customer.

Bill has built a team of highly experienced and knowledgeable people to work with our supplier clients. We can guide your business to recycle more, landfill less, and maximize any rebates that remain possible.

Dear Current and Future Customers:

Thanks so very much for your ongoing business.
We need you to be in the loop and fully understand the current situation for recyclables in China.

The Chinese government has set new standards for imports to China and their inspectors are in place as of March 1st.
Their inspection of the recyclables received in shipping containers includes:

  • 100% of ALL containers will be x-rayed for prohibitives
  • 30% of ALL containers will have the doors opened for inspection and could be partially unloaded to inspect quality
  • 10% of ALL containers will be opened, unloaded and spread out so that each bale can be carefully inspected
  • Any rejections from any of these steps could cause immediate banishment from your and our shipping to China.

Remember – The Chinese quality decisions are based on a visual inspection, that is perception, and any rejects cannot be verified by actual sorting in China.  Prohibitives & Outthrows cannot be greater than .05% combined.

  • Prohibitives are anything that is not made completely of paper
  • Outthrows are paper that is not kraft or corrugated cardboard

Please  reach out to your sales person with any questions.

This is what Dianne Robinson has shared with her clients in the Seattle/Tacoma region and we wish to share it throughout the Company.

Green Planet 21 offers durable, pre-owned U.S. manufactured balers for rent or purchase. Our balers are reconditioned and fully warrantied. When boxes and other protective packaging accumulate as refuse in your store or factory, it becomes imperative to handle and remove the scrap as efficiently as possible. With a vertical baler, the recyclable material can be compressed and tied into neat bales for easy storage and transport.

We deliver and install our balers, and we guide your staff in their most safe and efficient use. To install a baler, rental clients must have adequate electrical power within six feet of the installation area, 20 amps@480v. With rental clients, we retain the first right of refusal on old corrugated cardboard (OCC.) A site must be able to store 12 bales between pickups. We are experienced in designing customized solutions to meet almost any scrap removal situation where a baler is needed. Renting a baler to compress cardboard can save on capital expenses and the sale of the recyclables offsets the cost of rental.

Unlike appliances that are now produced cheaply and shipped to America from overseas and are problematic to repair, our reconditioned balers are reliable and made to last. They descend from American farm machinery.
