Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Why is commercial plastics recycling important?

Ans. Plastics recycling is hugely beneficial for the environment. Producing products from recycled plastic requires significantly less energy than manufacturing plastic from scratch, thereby savings carbon and other GHG emissions. Manufacturing virgin plastics requires a large amount of water, petroleum, natural gas and coal as raw material. Some estimate that around 40% of petroleum consumption can be reduced by simply recycling discarded and old plastic waste.

Q. What type of plastics can be recycled?

Ans. There are seven types of plastic that can be recycled, each of which is identifiable by the triangle symbol on the container that identifies what resin it’s made of. The types of plastic that can be recycled are: PETE or PET (polyethylene terephthalate), HDPE (high-density polyethylene), V or PVC (vinyl), LDPE (low-density polythylene), PP (polypropylene), PS (polystyrene), and a category of miscellaneous products like nylon and 5-gallon water jugs.

Q. What industries generate the most plastic waste and recyclables?

Ans. The most prominent source of plastic waste generation is in packaging manufacturing, with textiles being the second most prominent source. The raw materials for these consumer plastics are pellet-sized polymers produced by the global petroleum industry, making many of the largest plastic producers oil and gas and chemical companies. Green Planet 21 works with companies in many industries to recycle large quantities of plastics, including distribution centers, food and beverage companies, household goods and cleaning product companies, clothing companies, cosmetics and personal care product companies, and more.
